The Varsity will show the Argentine hit comedy “Wild Tales” on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The movie is another offering in the venue’s Art House Film Series.
Six linked tales begin with a slight or terrible transgression and end in calamitous and hilarious acts of revenge and come-uppance. In the story “La Bombita,” a demolition expert loses his cool when his car is towed. In “El Más Fuerte” a poor man and rich man are locked in a battle of class conflict and road rage. In “Pasternak,” a strange coincidence portends the ultimate act of revenge. And, in “Hasta que la muerte nos separe,” a jealous bride wrecks her wedding to save her marriage.
Argentine director Damián Szifron explains that the tales are tied together by “the fuzzy boundary that separates civilization from barbarism, the vertigo of losing your temper and the undeniable pleasure of losing control.”
“Wild Tales” developed a critical following at festivals like Cannes and Toronto. It opened in Argentina in August 2014, and quickly became the all-time highest-grossing Argentine film in Argentina.
The Varsity will show “Wild Tales” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct 25. Tickets are $7 for general admission, $5 for students with ID, and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.
“Wild Tales” is rated R. No one younger than 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian.
