Caravan to Cuba in Carbondale Monday April 24, 2017
The IFCO*/Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba arrives in Carbondale on Monday April 24. For the last 27 years the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois has helped organize an event as the Caravan passes through Southern Illinois. Joined by the Program and Social Action Committees of the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship and the Church of the Good Shepherd UCC we will host a dinner and presentation at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane.
The evening will begin at 5:30 PM with a performance of Latin jazz with, HOT! Sauce. Dinner at 6:00 PM will be followed by a presentation from Moon (Luna) Vazquez who is a member of the US Women and Cuba Collaboration (www.womenandcuba.org/). She has visited Cuba many times and led a number of delegations to the island. Her area of expertise is the role of women in Cuba and the role of the LGBTQ community in Cuba. She is knowledgeable about Cuba’s social programs and the current state of US-Cuba relations. Sadly Gladys Abella, church leader at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Marianao, Havana, sister church with Carbondale’s Church of the Good Shepherd UCC, was unable to travel due to illness.
Donations will be collected to help the Caravan conduct this important campaign to educate the U.S. public about the benefits of normalizing relations and the need to pass legislation to lift the embargo with Cuba.

Pastors for Peace is a special ministry of the *Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), and was created in 1988 to pioneer the delivery of humanitarian aid to Latin America and the Caribbean. Pastors for Peace offers concerned US citizens an opportunity to demonstrate and enact an alternative people-to-people foreign policy based in justice and mutual respect. They have organized dozens of Pastors for Peace Caravans to various countries delivering life-giving aid, and organizing at home for a more just policy toward our neighbors in the hemisphere.
