Fall Open House at War Bluff Wildlife Sanctuary
November 10, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pmfree
Everyone is invited to join the Shawnee Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society on Saturday November 10, for the Annual Fall Open House at War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
Chapter members will be serving a potluck lunch around the campfire or woodstove beginning at 12 PM, followed by explorations of the sanctuary and maybe even a hike to the War Bluff.
Autumn is the perfect time to roam around the nearly 500-acre wildlife sanctuary. Located in the shadows of the Shawnee National Forest’s War Bluff, just a few miles north of Golconda in Pope County, the sanctuary is the largest of fourteen owned by Illinois Audubon Society. Come explore the trails, cross the streams, watch the wildlife, try to find all seven ponds and discover something new! All are welcome and invited to enjoy the outdoors with new friends and old. Have a mug of hot cider, share a bowl of chili around the campfire and learn more about the Shawnee Chapter and Illinois Audubon Society.
It just happens that the Open House falls on the same day as the monthly volunteer Stewardship Day. Volunteers will gather at 10 AM to work on sanctuary projects, such as maintaining trails and buildings, cleaning nest boxes and other tasks. Stewardship Day at War Bluff is held on the second Saturday of each month. What do you need to volunteer? Just dress for the weather, wear boots, bring work gloves, lunch and a drink and be ready to have some fun!
Shawnee Chapter Illinois Audubon Society was formed in 1995, and serves as stewards of War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. Shawnee Chapter is the local chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, with members from across southernmost Illinois. We focus on issues of environmental significance to Southern Illinois, with special emphasis on those issues that pertain to the conservation and preservation of our native fauna and flora.
