The Marx Brothers wreak havoc on the Florida land boom in “The Cocoanuts,” showing at The Varsity on Friday, Sept. 14.
Visual gags, puns and musical numbers abound in this beloved Marx Brothers classic. Groucho plays a failing hotelier at Hotel de Cocoanuts, where the employees are demanding their wages. “Wages?” says Groucho, “You want to be wage slaves? Well, what makes wage slaves? Wages!” Groucho’s last chance at success is to sell land plots to (or marry) the wealthy Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont), his only paying guest.
Harpo and Chico arrive, hoping to fill their empty suitcase with the guests’ valuables. But, Groucho recruits them to help inflate the swampland he is about to sell off.
Groucho: “You know what an auction is, don’t you?”
Chico: “I come from Italy on the Atlantic auction.”
The Cocoanuts contains song such as “When My Dreams Come True,” “The Bell-Hops,” “Monkey Doodle Doo,” and “Tale of the Shirt.”
