MAKE 2019 A YEAR OF PEACE AND JUSTICE
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/FOR Monthly Vigil for Peace and Justice will be held Saturday, January 5, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Illinois Ave. and Main Street in Carbondale.
“Around the world, nations are signing onto a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. Even major weapons dealing nations are ending weapons sales to Saudi Arabia. Even the world’s biggest war maker is taking positive steps. The U.S. Congress is closer than it’s ever been to ending a war, the war on Yemen. Meanwhile, Trump is proposing to pull the U.S. military out of Syria and to reduce its presence in Afghanistan. And Iraqi legislators are demanding that the U.S. military finally get out of Iraq.
These are all partial steps that need to be built on. And they stand out in contrast to all the negative developments: increases in military spending, base construction, drone use, nuclear weapons production, threats of new wars, increased hostility between the world’s biggest nuclear governments, a rise in racist and xenophobic hatred that fuels and is fueled by war, the ongoing normalization of militarism, and climate and environmental collapse”.
The Peace Coalition joins with World Beyond War to build on the positives and reverse the negatives!
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The Peace Coalition Monthly Meeting will follow the Vigil at Cristaudo’s Café and Bakery.
