PEACE COALITION PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 2019
“HANDS OFF VENEZUELA”
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois Monthly Vigil for Peace and Justice will be held Saturday, March 2, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Illinois Ave. and Main Street in Carbondale.
The United States has a horrifying track record of military interventions in Latin America leaving death and destruction in its wake. And Venezuela is a tinderbox right now — in political freefall, with Venezuelans facing violence, hunger, and poverty. Far from alleviating suffering, a Trump-led deployment of troops, tanks, and helicopters in Venezuela would be an absolute disaster.
President Trump appointed convicted criminal Elliott Abrams to run Venezuela policy — a man who helped cover up genocides and death squads in Central America… yet astoundingly, has the nerve to claim he only wants to support the Venezuelan people.
The Peace Coalition joins multiple organizations to demand that “the U.S. immediately cease all hostile actions against Venezuela — lift all sanctions, stop backing a coup, cease efforts to destroy the Venezuelan economy and respect the right of the Venezuelan people to self-determination.”
Diplomacy, not war, is the answer. Mexico, Uruguay, and the Vatican have offered to facilitate dialogue between sitting president Maduro and opposition leader Guaido. What’s needed now is for the international community, especially the U.S., to support this critical opportunity — without dialogue, there will likely be a civil war and invasion by the U.S. military
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The Peace Coalition Monthly Meeting will follow the Vigil at Cristaudo’s Café and Bakery. All are invited to attend.
