It will be a fantastic combination of music when The Jewels, vocalist Union County Sal and guitarist Joe Palermo take the Balcony Stage at The Varsity on Aug. 18.
Saxophonist Kevin Ohlau founded The Jewels, a jazz trio originating in Carbondale, in 2010. The Jewels perform as many as 30 of Ohlau’s original compositions and have played regionally and in Chicago. Ohlau is producing the Aug. 18 show.
The Saturday night performance will feature Union County Sal (Susan Addington of Makanda) on vocals. The band has put together a set list of songs recorded by notable artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington and more.
Appearing as a special guest at the show is Joe Palermo, a classically trained guitarist from Southern Illinois. He is currently performing with The Squadfathers and The Downstate Music Company.
Advance tickets are available at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com. Tickets also will be available at the venue when doors open at 6:30. That’s also when the Varsity Bar opens, offering beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, popcorn and snacks.
