‘Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ screening in conjunction with SISO’s ‘French Valentine’
February 7 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$5 – $7
The Varsity will screen the 1964 French romantic tragedy “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” as a precursor to a Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra fundraising concert in February. The movie also opens a new film series at The Varsity.
Offering a French valentine to audiences, the SIU School of Music symphony will accompany The Poor People of Paris, a well-established St. Louis combo specializing in French jazz. The concert includes music by Michel Legrand, Marvin Hamlisch and selections from “Les Misèrables.”
“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” opens a new Thursday night film series at The Varsity called Peripheral Vision. Each Thursday for 10 weeks, The Varsity will screen foreign, independent and out-of-the-mainstream movies.
“Umbrellas” was directed by Jacques Demy and is, in the director’s words, a film in song. The romantic tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve), an employee in her widowed mother’s chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. After the pair spend an evening together before Guy is leaves for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, she discovers she is pregnant and has to choose between waiting for her lover’s return or accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy merchant. Performed completely in song, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is cinematic opera. Award-winning French composer Legrand composed the score. The film is rated G.
Walter Metz, professor of Film Criticism at SIU and host of “SIU Reviews” on WSIU-FM, will introduce the film.
