Bringing Campus and Community Together To Address The Future of Water
“The Future of Water,” is scheduled to be held on April 18, 2018, at Guyon Auditorium (Morris Library), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), starting at 7 p.m. This event is jointly sponsored by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) southern Illinois chapter, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and the University Honors Program at SIUC, and Marion Medical Mission. This event is the first of its kind that attempts to link community and campus in a conversation on this topic.
The event will feature local groups working to benefit human, water rights around the world. This family-friendly event originated with the southern Illinois UNA-USA chapter’s outreach to public schools with the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a fictionalized telling of the very real circumstances that young people face in providing the most basic necessities for their families in sub-Saharan Africa. Local high school students will share a dramatic reading from this book. Members of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute will provide an update on the late Paul Simon’s commitment to water policy and the preservation of water for future generations.
