“Young Frankenstein” at The Varsity
October 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm$5 – $7
“What hump?” “No tongue!” “Put … the … candle … back.”
In the early 1970s, comedian and actor Gene Wilder began thinking about an idea for a screenplay about the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, who inherited his grandfather’s mansion and his research. That movie, “Young Frankenstein,” became a favorite among moviegoers around the world.
The screenplay for the 1974 G-rated film was written by Wilder and Mel Brooks, the movie’s director, and the pair won the 1975 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was very loosely based on the novel by Mary Shelley.
The story begins when respected medical lecturer, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Wilder) inherits his infamous grandfather’s estate in Transylvania. Arriving at the castle, Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather’s experiments with the help of servants Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr) and the fearsome Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman). After he creates his own monster (Peter Boyle), new complications ensue with the arrival of the doctor’s fiancée, Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn).
Leachman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress; Garr took home the award for Best Supporting Actress. Gene Hackman made a cameo appearance. According to the movie’s BluRay commentary, Hackman – who had been nominated three times for an Academy Award and won once – learned about “Young Frankenstein” through his frequent tennis partner Wilder and requested a role. Ultimately, the lonely, blind character Hackman portrayed, became one of the most popular and memorable scenes in comedy history.
