Join the Daniel H. Brush Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Carbondale Public Library for a presentation by historian Darrel Dexter on Ulysses S. Grant’s assignments in Anna and Cairo during the Civil War. Dexter will read some of Grant’s impressions of southern Illinois as expressed in letters to his wife, Julia, and official war records. Grant wrote his wife from Anna, “once through here I hope there will be no further need of me.” In reality the Union had further need of him and he spent many months in Cairo preparing for the invasion of the South. Julia (Dent) Grant and their young children also came to Cairo for extended visits while he was stationed at the military post. Photographs of Grant and Cairo taken during the Civil War will enhance the talk.
