Gretchen Dabbs, Professor of Anthropology at SIU, will discuss the impact of epidemic disease on monotheism in ancient Egypt at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement (SILIR) Zoom meeting. She will introduce new evidence for an epidemic disease at the ancient capital of Amarna, which was abruptly abandoned after only 20 years of occupation (c. 1332 BCE). She will address the question of whether the epidemic caused the abandonment of monotheism, which had been in place in Amarna.
Professor Dabbs is a Physical and Forensic Anthropologist. She conducts bio-archaeological research, specifically examining human skeletal remains for evidence of health and nutrition, both in Egypt and the North American Arctic.
