MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION TO STOP WAR IN UKRAINE
SATURDAY, MAY 7, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, May 7, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
This devastating war is killing thousands, displacing millions, and causing hunger, inflation, unrest, and increased militarism globally. It is not far-fetched to foresee a protracted war that goes on for years. Just look at the decades-long US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 7-year of fighting in the Donbas, and the interest the U.S. has in bleeding the Russian economy dry.
Add to that the confusion of the American people. They have tremendous sympathy for Ukrainians, but don’t understand that the way to save Ukrainian lives is to stop the war.
President Biden is asking Congress to send billions of dollars in additional weapons to Ukraine in hopes of defeating Russia militarily. Democrats and Republicans have found rare unity in imposing crushing sanctions on Russia, seeking to destroy the Russian economy.
We’ve seen these approaches attempted and failed in the past. Weapons and sanctions won’t end this war. Only diplomacy will and there are plenty of non-violent policy options that will save lives.
If we have learned anything from the last 20 years of the war on terror, it’s that military gains are short-lived and exact a high human, financial and moral cost. The path we’re now on brings us dangerously close to nuclear war and global annihilation. We must do everything we can to help the parties agree to a ceasefire and lay the groundwork for enduring peace. The Peace in Ukraine coalition includes local, national and international groups across four continents presenting a unified response by peace-loving people around the world to say No to War in Ukraine; Yes to Negotiations and Peace. https://www.peaceinukraine.org/
