CARBONDALE — Yes, these movies are being screened on cable or streaming services, but there
is something very special about watching holiday classics on a big screen in an historic theater
in downtown Carbondale.
Tickets are $8 or $4 for students. Go to bit.ly/3VH7E2T to purchase tickets in advance at
Eventbrite. Tickets are not available in advance at the venue but will be available on the day of
each screening when doors and the Varsity Bar open 30 minutes before showtime.
The movies will be screened in the Balcony. Those who are unable to reach the Balcony will be
admitted free (with a guest) and invited to watch the movie on a 60-inch HDTV in the Varsity
Bar.
“Elf,” 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17
The popular movie was directed by Jon Favreau and stars Will Ferrell as the title character, a
human raised by Santa’s elves. He learns about his origins and heads to New York City to meet
his biological father, played by James Caan. The film also stars Zooey Deschanel, Mary
Steenburgen, Edward Asner and Bob Newhart. Ferrell’s performance as Buddy the Elf was
praised by critics and audiences alike, with many calling it one of his best performances.
“White Christmas,” 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18
This 1954 American musical romantic comedy stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary
Clooney and Vera-Ellen. It features the songs of Irving Berlin. The film is notable for being the
first to be released in VistaVision, a widescreen process developed by Paramount that entailed
using twice the surface area of standard 35mm film. The movie tells the story of a successful
song-and-dance team that becomes romantically involved with a sister act, and who team up to
save the failing Vermont in of their former World War II commanding general.
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18
This 1946 American Christmas fantasy comedy-drama was produced and directed by Frank
Capra. It stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams in order to
help others and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his
guardian angel. Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his
community would be if he had never been born. “It's a Wonderful Life” is considered one of the
greatest films ever made and was nominated for five Academy Awards.
