Protest for Peace in Gaza
SUNDAY, JANUARY 7, 1:00 PM TO 3:00 PM
On Sunday, January 7 at 1 P.M. the Muslim community will host the weekly Protest for Peace in Gaza. The group will march from the Carbondale Muslim Center, 530 N. Wall St. to the corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
Supporters may meet at the Town Square Pavilion at 1:30 P.M. on Sunday for the rally lasting until 3 P.M. Participants will chant and display signs with themes like Ceasefire in Gaza NOW, Free Palestine, Respect for human rights, End the siege of Gaza.
As the death toll from Israel’s bombardment of Gaza since the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel now exceeds 22,000, South Africa has filed a case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague accusing Israel of genocide and trying to “destroy Palestinians in Gaza.” This comes as the Biden administration has bypassed Congress again to approve selling Israel nearly $150 million in artillery munitions, suggesting that the State Department is ignoring its own rules about arming entities engaged in war crimes. Local citizens continue calling for an immediate Ceasefire and the immediate provision of aid to address the starvation, disease and suffering of displaced citizens of Gaza.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
