The City of Carbondale invites the public to celebrate the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Downtown Entertainment
and Events Plaza (Phase 1) on Saturday, September 28th 2024, at 3:00 PM in Carbondale, Illinois. This event will kick off
the 3rd Annual Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival, a fun-filled educational event that features the collaboration between
the SIU Cannabis Science Center, SIU Fermentation Science Institute, Carbondale Main Street, and the City of
Carbondale.
The Downtown Entertainment and Events Plaza project holds significance both locally and regionally, as this beautiful
facility will support Carbondale’s vibrant local music scene, and connect local artists and performers to the national
entertainment industry. Once completed, the Plaza will become a venue for many events, including concerts, comedy
nights, plays, school performances, private gatherings, and more!
This project was made possible by a $2 million grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic
Opportunity’s Rebuild Downtowns and Main Streets program. This financial backing demonstrates the recognition of
The Downtown Entertainment and Events Plaza as a critical infrastructure development that will celebrate music and
the performing arts in Carbondale, and significantly contribute to our residents’ quality of life.
Phase 1 of the Plaza will include a permanent stage, an ADA-compliant parking lot, and a large lawn that will
allow Carbondale to host entertainment and performing arts events that attract thousands of residents and visitors to
the downtown area. The Plaza will also allow for the expansion of Carbondale’s “Off the Rails” concert series, and pave
the way for even larger events and festivals.
We hope you join the community to be a part of this important event. After the groundbreaking we encourage guests to
stay and enjoy the Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival program and celebrate Carbondale’s vibrant future.
