RESPECT AND PRESERVE GAZA CEASEFIRE/NO MORE WEAPONS FOR MIDEAST VIOLENCE
SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 2025 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, March 1, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, March 2 from 1:00 -2:00 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, to celebrate the fragile ceasefire, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
The U.S. has spent over $17.9 billion in U.S. taxpayer funding on weapons for Israel in the past 16 months, and tens of thousands of U.S. munitions have been used against civilian targets in Gaza to devastating effect, resulting in more than 48,000 Palestinians killed and entire cities flattened in what historians and human rights watchdogs have found to be a “plausible case of genocide.” Now Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement, failing to release 620 political prisoners and withholding the tents and temporary housing promised leading to infant deaths from hypothermia. Netanyahu has failed to send negotiators to continue peace negotiations.
The Israeli offensive in the northern West Bank has destroyed businesses, homes, infrastructure similar to Gaza destruction and has displaced 40,000 residents, denying them return to their homes. Israel has now started bombing in Syria south of Damascus declaring the area should be a demilitarized zone, despite having its own soldiers there.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is once again introducing legislation aimed at halting U.S. arms sales to Israel. The Senator’s office says that the four, new Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRDs) would block $8.56 billion worth of weapons to the country. The Foreign Assistance Act and Arms Export Control Act require sales to be consistent with internationally-recognized human rights.
“With Trump and Netanyahu openly talking about forcibly displacing millions of Palestinians from Gaza – in other words, ethnic cleansing – it would be unconscionable to provide more of the bombs and weapons Israel has used to kill so many civilians and make life unlivable in Gaza.”
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
