CARBONDALE, IL- February 28, 2025 Southern Illinois Culture & Arts in Bilingual Education (SI CABE) is partnering with Carbondale United and the Carbondale Public Library to host a lively, bilingual interactive presentation for youth and families that includes video, rich discussion, and lots of musical enjoyment! Catalina Maria Johnson makes a strong case for hip-hop by Latino and indigenous artists from the U.S. and the Spanish-speaking Americas as a legitimate form of contemporary poetry: https://ilhumanities.org/speakers/catalina-maria-johnson
“This is the fifth time we have welcomed Catalina back to Carbondale to share this lively and intriguing presentation on Latinx music culture, and we are extra excited to host her again at the public library and with a new partner agency, Carbondale United, to share authentic culture and language with new and wider audiences,” said Colleen Springer-Lopez, project coordinator.
The presentation, “Latin Hip Hop as a New Poetry” offered in a bilingual English-Spanish format, will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main Street in Carbondale, from 5:30-6:30.
This discussion, co-hosted by the community-centered violence prevention program, Carbondale United, that provides youth with leadership and everyday life skills to create a better community, kicks off an event-filled National Poetry Month at the local Carbondale Public Library, which generously provides resources and services to support the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of Carbondale and surrounding communities.
The event is part of the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. Illinois Humanities, the Illinois affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a statewide nonprofit organization that activates the humanities through free public programs, grants, and educational opportunities that foster reflection, spark conversation, build community, and strengthen civic engagement.
These events are free and open to all audiences. For more information, please visit https://www.facebook.com/So.IL.CABE or contact Yahaira Vargas at soilcabe@gmail.com or call 314-730-4005.
