Friday Flicks at The Varsity: “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
September 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$5 – $7
The Varsity opens its fall Friday Flicks schedule with a screening of a movie considered one of the best films ever made.
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was only the second movie in Academy Award history to win all five top awards in 1976: Best Picture (Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz, producers), Best Director (Miloš Forman), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher) and Best Screenplay (Dale Wasserman, who also adapted the story for Broadway). It also won numerous Golden Globes and Baftas.
The 1975 film is based on the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey. It stars Nicholson as Randle Patrick McMurphy. When McMurphy is transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But Nurse Ratched (Fletcher) runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward’s patients and leads to a shocking and powerful ending.
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is No. 33 on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years… 100 Movies list. In 1993, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The film is rated R and runs 2 hours and 13 minutes. Patrons younger than 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
