Jericho Walk for Immigrant Rights
July 14 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pmFree
Southern Illinois Immigrant Rights Project invites you to a vigil and procession calling on our government to respect the human right to seek asylum and to call for an immediate end to inhumane detention conditions.
Sunday, July 14, 2019, Meet at 3:30 pm. at Carbondale Town Square Pavilion for vigil and speakers. Then walk with us to and around the Paul Simon Federal Building.
The Jericho Walk is an interfaith prayer and procession as an act of solidarity. It is open to people of all or no faiths. The walk draws inspiration from the Battle of Jericho, in which the community marched around the city of Jericho seven times, causing the city walls to fall. The Jericho Walk of today is a peaceful and prayerful walk to bring down the walls of our unjust immigration system. Walking around the Senator Paul Simon Federal Building on July 14, we will call for a system that:
*acts with compassion towards our fellow humans, regardless of country of origin or immigration status
*recognizes the legal right to seek asylum
*honors the sacredness of family and ends the trauma of family separation as an enforcement tool
*ends threats against immigrant families in our communities
