Learning in Retirement: “19th Century Steamboats Built along the Lower Ohio River”

Robert Swenson, the featured speaker at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting, will share the results of his research on more than 270 steamers known to have been built at Smithland, Paducah, Metropolis, Mound City, and Cairo. He will include personal memories of steamboat activity as he grew up in Metropolis.
Mr. Swenson, who taught for many years in the SIU Carbondale School of Architecture, has conducted extensive research on steamboats. His private architectural practice from 1983 to 2011 focused on historic preservation/restoration projects from Springfield to Cairo and Paducah. In 2008 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois State Historical Society.
The meeting, free and open to the public, will be held at Grace United Methodist Church located at 220 N. Tower Road in Carbondale. A coffee and social hour will begin at 9:30 a.m.
