Peace Coalition Peace and Justice Vigil: Protect Human Rights
December 7, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois Monthly Vigil for Peace and Justice will be held Saturday, December 7, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Illinois Ave. and Main Street in Carbondale. Before or after the vigil, the Peace Coalition invites the public to visit their table at the Alternative Gift Fair at the Carbondale Civic Center from 11am to 2pm.
While the rhetoric from governments and organizations claiming to support human rights is vigorous and inspiring, actual events bear witness to a dismal failure to fully respect those rights. December 10 marks the 71st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 8 protects from arbitrary arrest, detention and exile. Article 21 includes the language: The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will be expressed in periodic and genuine elections…
While the U.S. claims full rights to its’ own sovereignty and democracy, we now see another example of covert subversion of a functioning democracy. In Bolivia a false claim of election fraud was then followed on by violent demonstrations from right-wing protestors leading to the “crisis” giving U.S. trained military leaders the excuse to order the exile the Indigenous president Evo Morales and his government. In his place a right wing senator from a party that received 4% share of the October election declared herself president, describing “the indigenous majority of Bolivians as ‘satanic’.” She declared immunity for the military and police and dozens of deaths have occurred at their hands in the Indigenous led demonstrations that have followed. The very popular and winning party of Morales has been declared illegal. One wonders what would happen if the Republicans declared the Democratic Party illegal?
The likely inspiration for this long planned overthrow of an indigenous government is the nationalization of some mining companies and the recent negotiations with China over developing the world’s largest lithium reserve and other valuable minerals that are part of Bolivia’s potential national wealth.
While Bolivia is still early on the path to reversing poverty and discrimination and creating smoothly functioning institutions of government, Morales remains very popular with the indigenous majority. This return of the country to a regressive, brutal right wing harks of numerous U.S. led or supported coups in Latin America and the world. Places like Honduras, Guatemala, Chile, Egypt, Iran and so many more demonstrate how harmful this covert imperialism is for the people and their human rights. The Peace Coalition calls for this event to be labeled the “coup” it is and the U.N. to help monitor and negotiate a peaceful resolution.
