In their presentation at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting, Gary Shafer and Alyssa Connell will talk about the history and development of the Southern Illinois Airport (SIA). The meeting will be at SIA and a bus tour (with several on and off stops) of the airport campus is planned. The speakers will also cover plans for the future and explain why SIA is one of the busiest airports in Illinois.
Gary Shafer is a 45-year veteran of the aviation industry and began flying in the early 1970s. He has spent the last 43 years managing SIA, including 20 years as manager of the airport’s fuel and pilot services.
Alyssa Connell founded Connell Aviation Group, an aviation and aerospace marketing firm. She brings awareness of aviation to Southern Illinois through marketing and public relations activities.
The meeting, free and open to the public, will begin at the new main building (straight ahead at the end of the airport entrance road) at Southern Illinois Airport, 556 North Airport Rd in Murphysboro. For those who wish to attend a coffee hour starting at 9:30, coffee is available for purchase in the St. Nicholas Brewery inside the terminal.
