LET PEACE ECLIPSE WAR

SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2024 NOON TO 1:00 PM

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, April 6, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
The wars currently raging in Gaza and Ukraine continue to escalate toward wider war. By sending 2000 LB neighborhood destroying bombs and F-35 fighter jets to the right-wing government of Israel, the U.S. is lighting the match. This is the time of year to remember Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beyond Vietnam speech, given on April 4, 1967, one year before his assassination. Quoting from his speech, we hear a message our society should have learned long ago: “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death…America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing except a tragic death wish to prevent us from reordering our priorities so that the pursuit of peace will take precedence over the pursuit of war”.
