“The climate emergency is driven by fossil fuel use that extracts from the land’s resources, including its people. Militarism utilizes war and weapons and puts up walls and borders in service of political power and economic growth.” https://www.nationalpriorities.org/blog/2024/04/22/april-climate-and-war-linked-more-ever/
Campaign Nonviolence provides the call to action. “The climate crisis has already displaced millions of people from their homes due to superstorms, floods, rising sea levels, droughts, fires, and more. If we do not stop using fossil fuels, the future of humanity—and thousands of other species—is at stake. Violence toward the Earth in the forms of oil and gas use, extractive mining, toxic waste, pollution, and destruction of ecosystems can no longer continue. We must practice nonviolence toward the Earth in the forms of renewable energy, conservation, regenerative practices, and much more.
At the same time, militarism and war threaten millions of people worldwide. War provides no real solutions or security in this time of ecological crisis. It pulls resources away from the immense challenge of a swift and rapid transition away from fossil fuels. It causes wanton destruction of the environment in both active war zones and in ongoing militarism. The Pentagon is the single-largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels and its violence is used to back greed-based consumption and global extraction of natural resources.
Instead, humanity deserves a peaceful, living planet.”
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
