The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, July 2, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
For decades, more than 11 million people in Cuba have suffered from a brutal U.S. trade embargo and illegal economic sanctions designed to restrict access to basic necessities like food, clean water, and life-saving medicines. For the 21st time the Peace Coalition is hosting the IFCO/Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba on Friday July 8 to challenge this isolation that undermines the health and well-being of Cuba’s people, especially egregious in the era of COVID. Last month, President Biden announced the lifting of some Trump-era travel restrictions. The next step is to lift the Embargo, which requires Congressional action. Each year since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has voted in overwhelming majorities to denounce the U.S. embargo against Cuba as illegal under international law.
Sanctions are collective punishment and illegal under international law. Over 40 countries, comprising a third of humanity, are so targeted by the US. Third countries trading with targets of US sanctions also face heavy fines. This deadly form of economic warfare destroys regional development.
As over 60 years of US sanctions against the Cuban Revolution prove, sanctions meant to achieve the regime change the US wants to impose have, in fact, resulted in raining misery upon the targeted people.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
