SPECIAL PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
SAY NO TO U.S. WARS!
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will be holding a special protest vigil for peace on Saturday, October 15th in support of the United National Antiwar Coalition’s call to “Say NO to U.S. Wars” by taking to the streets during the week of October 15-23rd. The vigil will take place from Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale, in front of the Carbondale Town Square pavilion. Some signs will be provided but participants may bring their own, consistent with our message of peace.
When Russian president Vladimir Putin recently announced the mobilization of 300,000 military reservists in Russia, many in the news media reported on various acts of resistance by proponents of peace in that country, yet they do not give the same attention to our own peace movement here at home. This action has been called, in part, to raise awareness that there are many in this country who oppose our own government’s acts of military aggression, provocations and violations of international law.
For example, the U.S. continues to occupy about 30 percent of the sovereign nation of Syria, where its oil fields are, and is literally looting the nation’s oil, with no justification whatsoever under international law. It continues its large military presence in Iraq over the express opposition of the Iraqi government.
Our federal government continues to shovel billions of dollars of military aid to Ukraine to fuel its proxy war against Russia with virtually no opposition in Congress, driving us ever closer to the brink of nuclear war. The U.S. has engaged in nearly as dangerous saber-rattling against China, highlighted by Nancy Pelosi’s provocative trip to Taiwan. Congress just passed another record-breaking military budget with little resistance, while continuing to fund nearly 1,000 foreign military bases — 95% of all foreign military bases in the world. Economic sanctions greatly harm workers in the targeted countries, our own people here at home, driving up inflation. They are also causing collateral damage to the people of Europe, who are now facing an economic slowdown and a very harsh winter.
We support UNAC’s call to “Stop Washington’s war moves toward Russia and China, and end the endless wars: Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Palestine . . . everywhere.” We invite all concerned people in Southern Illinois to join us on October 15th.
