The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, January 4, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, January 5 from 1:00 -2:00 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
Southern Illinois’s economy and culture have long been enhanced by immigrants to our community, whether they came to study, work in health care, agriculture or factories, whether they were fleeing unsafe situations or just hoped to be part of the “American dream.” Statistics show that immigrant communities are far less likely to engage in crime than our own citizens. Why then are we threatened with a policy that will be costly, disruptive, likely to deny legal rights and due process and catch-up citizens and legal residents in the chaos.
Instead, we need to examine U.S. policies that push people from their homes…a drastic act that does not ensure self-preservation or safety.
Instead of further militarizing our society with mass deportations, family separations, inhumane detentions, it is time to formulate a full overhaul of our inhumane immigration system — including a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., due process in our immigration system, and a permanent end to xenophobic travel bans. Most of our families were immigrants at some time. Our humanity demands we acknowledge and respect that.
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, January 15, 2025, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
