We are excited to announce that “The Censored” is currently on view at Artspace 304 until
March 27th. This powerful exhibition showcases artwork from our Print Collection that explores
the significant theme of censorship, aligning with the American Library Association’s (ALA) list
of 100 Banned Books from 2010 to 2019.
We aim to spark meaningful discussions about this crucial topic. The exhibition showcases
powerful nonviolent protest art, bold social critiques, and an exploration of widely challenged
and banned books from the ALA’s list. The selected prints highlight artists renowned for their
bold creativity and groundbreaking contributions to contemporary art. Among the highlights
are Richard Mock’s striking linocut illustrations, which appeared in *The New York Times* as
editorial cartoons during the 1980s and 1990s. Kiki Kogelnik’s compelling prints tackle the
urgent issues of femininity in corporate advertising. Alison Saar’s evocative works explore the
African diaspora and celebrate the identity of Black women. William Nelson Copley skillfully
combines elements of Pop Art with iconic American imagery, using satire to stimulate thought.
This collection celebrates self-expression and highlights the crucial need to amplify frequently
silenced or overlooked voices. During your visit to the gallery, we invite you to share your
favorite banned, challenged, or censored book—just write down the title and author on our
exhibition library checkout cards, and we’ll proudly display it for other visitors to engage with.
