The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute welcomes Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson for a virtual conversation on Thursday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. CT. Jackson and Institute Director John Shaw will talk about Jackson’s work as poet laureate, her life story and teaching career, and her vision of Illinois.
Jackson, who was born in Mississippi and grew up on Chicago’s South Side, was named Illinois’ fifth poet laureate in November 2020. She is a highly decorated poet, author, and playwright, having won numerous awards, including the American Book Award (twice), Pushcart Prize, Carl Sandberg Award, Shelley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America, and many more. Her writing has also been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. She is an alumna of Northwestern University in Evanston and the University of Chicago.
Her newest poetry collection, More Than Meat and Raiment: Poems, will be published this year.
